Höyrylämmittimiä, commonly known as steam radiators, are devices used for heating spaces by utilizing the thermal energy of steam. These radiators are a type of heat exchanger that transfers heat from steam to the surrounding air. The basic principle involves generating steam in a boiler, which is then circulated through pipes to the radiators. Within the radiator, the steam condenses, releasing its latent heat, which in turn heats the metal of the radiator. This heated metal then warms the air in the room through convection and radiation.

The construction of a typical steam radiator involves a series of hollow sections, often made of cast iron or steel. These sections are connected to form a larger heating surface. As steam enters the radiator, it fills these sections. The steam's temperature is typically above the desired room temperature, facilitating heat transfer. As the steam cools and condenses, it turns back into water, which then typically flows back to the boiler through a return pipe.

Steam heating systems offer several advantages, including rapid heating and the ability to deliver a significant amount of heat. However, they also require careful management of water levels and pressure within the system. Early steam radiators were often large and ornate, reflecting the design aesthetics of their time, while modern versions can be more streamlined and efficient. Maintenance is crucial to prevent issues like leaks or inefficient operation.
