Hõõrdel, more commonly known as friction, is a force that opposes the relative motion of surfaces in contact. It arises from the microscopic imperfections and interactions between the atoms and molecules of the contacting surfaces. When two surfaces are pressed together, these imperfections interlock, and molecular attractions resist their sliding past each other.

There are two main types of friction: static friction and kinetic friction. Static friction is the force that prevents an object from starting to move when a force is applied to it. It is a variable force that increases with the applied force until it reaches a maximum value, after which the object begins to move. Kinetic friction, also known as sliding friction, is the force that opposes the motion of an object that is already moving. It is generally less than the maximum static friction and is often approximated as a constant value for a given pair of surfaces and normal force.

The magnitude of the frictional force depends on the nature of the surfaces in contact and the force pressing them together, known as the normal force. This relationship is often described by the coefficient of friction, a dimensionless quantity that is determined experimentally. Materials with rougher surfaces typically have higher coefficients of friction than smoother surfaces.

Friction plays a crucial role in everyday life. It allows us to walk, drive cars, and hold objects. Without friction, most of our activities would be impossible. However, friction can also be undesirable, leading to wear and tear on machinery and energy loss in the form of heat. Lubricants are often used to reduce unwanted friction.
