Håfdføre is a Norwegian term that describes a specific type of slippery and potentially dangerous road condition. It occurs when a thin layer of ice forms on top of a layer of packed snow or slush. This creates an extremely slick surface, as the ice often acts like a lubricant between the tires and the underlying snow, significantly reducing traction.

The term literally translates to "ice-snow condition" or "icy-snow surface." Håfdføre is particularly hazardous because it can be difficult to detect. Unlike pure black ice, which is often visible, the layer of snow or slush can mask the underlying ice, making drivers unaware of the treacherous conditions until it's too late. This can lead to sudden loss of control, especially when braking or turning.

This condition is most common in regions experiencing freeze-thaw cycles, where temperatures fluctuate around the freezing point. As snow melts and then refreezes, the håfdføre can develop.
