Hálózatszint refers to a layer within a network, conceptualizing the organization of network communication protocols and functionalities. This model helps in understanding the complex interactions that occur when data is transmitted across a network. Different network models exist, such as the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model and the TCP/IP model, each with its own set of defined layers.

In the OSI model, there are seven distinct hálózatszint: the physical layer, data link layer, network layer, transport layer, session layer, presentation layer, and application layer. Each layer has specific responsibilities, handling tasks like physical transmission of bits, error detection and correction, logical addressing and routing, end-to-end connection management, data formatting, and user interface.

The TCP/IP model, more commonly used in practice, typically features four or five hálózatszint. These often include the network interface layer (or link layer), internet layer, transport layer, and application layer. While the terminology and exact number of layers may differ, the fundamental principle remains the same: breaking down complex network functions into manageable, hierarchical levels.

Data moves down the layers on the sending device, with each layer adding its own control information (headers or trailers). On the receiving device, the data moves up the layers, with each layer processing and removing the corresponding control information. This layered approach allows for modularity, making it easier to develop, maintain, and troubleshoot network protocols and devices. Changes in one hálózatszint do not necessarily impact other layers, promoting interoperability between different hardware and software vendors.
