The initial stage is often reconnaissance, where the attacker gathers information about the target. The goal is to identify vulnerabilities, potential entry points, and valuable assets.

Following reconnaissance, the attacker moves to weaponization, where they create or select a malicious payload, such as malware or an exploit, designed to take advantage of identified vulnerabilities. This is often combined with a delivery mechanism, like a phishing email or a compromised website, to reach the target.

Once delivered, the exploitation phase occurs. This is when the weaponized payload is successfully executed, breaching the target's defenses and gaining initial access. This could involve exploiting software flaws, weak passwords, or social engineering tactics.

After gaining access, the attacker focuses on maintaining persistence. This involves establishing a foothold within the system, ensuring they can regain access even if the initial exploit is discovered or patched. Techniques include installing backdoors, creating new user accounts, or modifying system configurations.

The subsequent phase is command and control. The attacker establishes communication channels between the compromised system and their own infrastructure to remotely manage the compromised machine, issue commands, and exfiltrate data.

Finally, the objective phase is where the attacker achieves their ultimate goal. This might involve data exfiltration, system destruction, ransomware deployment, or lateral movement to compromise other systems within the network. Each phase builds upon the previous one, representing a progression towards the attacker's objective.
