A hysterosalpingogram is a medical imaging test used to assess the shape and structure of the uterus and fallopian tubes in women. The procedure involves injecting a contrast agent into the uterus and then taking X-ray images to evaluate the flow of the agent through the fallopian tubes.

During the procedure, the woman typically lies on an examination table and a speculum is placed in the vagina to access the cervix. A catheter is then inserted through the cervix into the uterus, and a small amount of radioactive dye is released into the uterus. The dye is then flushed through the fallopian tubes, and a series of X-ray images are taken to observe the flow of the dye.

The hysterosalpingogram is often used to help diagnose infertility, recurrent miscarriage, and chronic pelvic pain in women. Abnormalities that the test may help identify include blockages in the fallopian tubes, uterine cavities, or malformations. Gynecologic surgeons, radiologists, and obstetricians often use the results of a hysterosalpingogram to develop a treatment plan for the patient. This may include surgery to remove blockages or correct abnormalities in the uterus or fallopian tubes.

The hysterosalpingogram involves some discomfort during the procedure, which typically includes discomfort during insertion of the speculum and catheter, as well as some cramping or spotting during or after the test. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are usually advised against having the test. Side effects are typically mild and temporary, but some women may experience more severe reactions, such as nausea or dizziness.
