Hyperventilation is a condition characterized by breathing too rapidly or too deeply. Symptoms of hyperventilation can vary but commonly include shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, lightheadedness, tingling or numbness in the extremities (fingers, toes, and around the mouth), chest pain, and a feeling of suffocation. In severe instances, it can lead to fainting.

Treatment for hyperventilation typically focuses on addressing the underlying cause. For anxiety-induced hyperventilation, techniques like slow, controlled breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, or cognitive behavioral therapy may be recommended. If hyperventilation is due to a medical condition, managing that condition is crucial. In acute episodes, a healthcare professional might guide the individual to breathe into a paper bag to help reintroduce carbon dioxide into the bloodstream, though this method is not always recommended and should be done under guidance.
