Hypertermoterapi is a term sometimes used (chiefly in Scandinavian and other languages) as a variant of hyperthermia therapy, the controlled application of elevated temperature to body tissues for therapeutic purposes. The practice ranges from localized heating of tumors or joints to regional perfusion and whole‑body heating. Techniques include radiofrequency, microwave, ultrasound, infrared, heated perfusates and conductive heating devices.

Mechanisms proposed for hypertermoterapi include direct cytotoxic effects of heat on cells, increased tumor blood flow and oxygenation, enhanced delivery and efficacy of certain chemotherapeutic agents, radiosensitization of malignant cells, and modulation of immune responses. In musculoskeletal medicine, superficially applied heat can reduce pain and increase tissue extensibility.

Clinical use is most established as an adjunct in oncology—combined with radiation or chemotherapy for certain solid tumors—and for palliative symptom control. Evidence varies by indication: some trials report improved local control or symptomatic benefit in specific cancers, while other outcomes remain inconclusive and dependent on technique, temperature, and treatment duration.

Risks and contraindications include burns, blisters, damage to deep tissues, cardiovascular stress, and exacerbation of certain comorbidities. Treatment requires careful temperature monitoring and equipment calibration. Regulatory status and clinical adoption differ between countries, and ongoing research seeks to clarify optimal protocols, indications and long‑term outcomes.
