Hypersleep, also known as suspended animation or cryosleep, is a hypothetical state of greatly reduced metabolic activity, often used in science fiction to facilitate long-duration space travel. The concept involves slowing down or completely halting biological processes, such as breathing, heart rate, and cellular decay, to keep individuals alive and healthy for extended periods without the need for food, water, or rest. This state is typically induced through extreme cold temperatures, sedatives, or other advanced biological manipulation.

The primary purpose of hypersleep in fictional narratives is to overcome the vast distances and time scales involved in interstellar journeys. Without it, voyages to distant star systems could take centuries or millennia, far exceeding the lifespan of human crews. By entering hypersleep, astronauts can effectively "skip" the journey, arriving at their destination with little or no time having passed for them personally. Upon arrival, they would be revived to continue their mission.

While a staple of science fiction, true hypersleep remains theoretical. Current scientific understanding and technology do not allow for the safe and reversible induction of such a profound metabolic slowdown. Research into cryonics, which aims to preserve bodies at very low temperatures with the hope of future revival, shares some conceptual links with hypersleep but faces significant scientific and ethical challenges. The feasibility of hypersleep hinges on overcoming complex biological barriers, including preventing cellular damage from freezing and ensuring the body can be safely reanimated without lasting harm.
