Hyperscale differs from traditional data centers by prioritizing scale, automation, and cost efficiency. They typically operate at tens of thousands of servers, emphasize supply chain efficiency, rapid hardware refresh cycles, and software-defined infrastructure, and are often built or operated by major cloud providers or internet companies.

Design and operations emphasize scale-out architectures (pods or racks), software-defined networking, AI-assisted capacity planning, and disciplined standardization. Cooling strategies range from air cooling with containment to liquid cooling in high-density deployments, with aggressive PUE targets.

History and examples: The concept emerged with web-scale operators in the 2000s, with Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Alibaba among leaders. Over time, more companies have built hyperscale campuses to support large, distributed services.

Benefits and challenges: Economies of scale reduce unit costs and enable rapid service deployment, but capital intensity, supply chain risk, energy use, and environmental impact pose ongoing challenges.
