Hyperinsulinemia itself describes chronically elevated insulin, often in the setting of insulin resistance or increased pancreatic beta‑cell activity. It can occur in obesity, metabolic syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, and early or compensated type 2 diabetes, as well as in rare endogenous insulin-secreting tumors (insulinomas) or after exogenous insulin administration.

Clinical relevance

Diagnosis relies on biochemical testing, including fasting insulin and C-peptide measurements and, when appropriate, an oral glucose tolerance test with insulin levels. Management targets the underlying cause: lifestyle modification and insulin-sensitizing therapies for insulin resistance disorders; surgical or medical treatment for insulin-secreting tumors.
