Hydrophobisiin is a term used in some scientific contexts to refer to hydrophobins, a family of small cysteine-rich secreted proteins produced by filamentous fungi. Hydrophobiin proteins self-assemble at hydrophobic-hydrophilic interfaces to form coatings that modify surface properties, enabling fungi to interact with air, water, and a variety of substrates.

Structure and classification: Hydrophobiin proteins are typically around 100 amino acids long after processing and contain eight conserved cysteine residues that form four disulfide bonds. They are commonly divided into two classes: Class I hydrophobiin proteins form highly insoluble, rodlet-like structures that require harsh conditions to dissolve, whereas Class II proteins form more soluble, amphipathic films at interfaces.

They also influence interactions with plant and animal surfaces and can coat hydrophobic surfaces to promote wetting or repulsion of water.
