Hydrometric refers to hydrometry, the measurement of the properties and movement of water, especially in rivers, lakes, and other surface-water bodies. In hydrology, hydrometric data include water level (stage), discharge, flow velocity, and water quality indicators such as temperature and turbidity. These measurements are collected at hydrometric stations operated by national and regional agencies to monitor water resources, manage floods, and support engineering projects.

Stage is measured with staff gauges, stilling wells, pressure transducers, radar, or ultrasonic sensors. Discharge is determined directly by current meters or indirectly via the stage–discharge relationship known as the rating curve. Velocity is measured by current meters or by acoustic Doppler devices (ADCPs). Water-quality parameters such as temperature, conductivity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and pH are monitored with probes and samplers.

Hydrometric data are organized into networks or systems, with data often shared publicly online. National examples include the United States Geological Survey’s National Water Information System and the Environment Agency’s river level networks in the United Kingdom; internationally, the World Meteorological Organization provides guidelines on observation, data quality, and sharing. Real-time feeds and standard data formats support rapid decision making.

Applications of hydrometric data include flood forecasting and warning, water resources planning, drought monitoring, irrigation design, hydropower operations, and ecological and climate-related studies. Challenges include equipment maintenance, station coverage in remote areas, sensor failures, and data gaps. Developments such as real-time telemetry and remote sensing complement ground-based measurements and enhance the reliability of hydrometric information.
