Hydrograph discharge refers to the graphical representation of streamflow or river discharge over time. A hydrograph plots discharge, typically measured in cubic meters per second or cubic feet per second, on the vertical axis against time on the horizontal axis. This visual tool is fundamental in hydrology for understanding how water flows through a river system.

The shape of a hydrograph provides valuable insights into the characteristics of a watershed and the nature of a particular rainfall or snowmelt event. A sudden, steep rise in discharge indicates a rapid response to heavy rainfall, often associated with impermeable surfaces or steep slopes. Conversely, a gradual, prolonged increase suggests a slower response, possibly due to infiltration into the soil or the melting of a snowpack. The peak discharge represents the maximum flow rate during the event.

Following the peak, the discharge typically declines, a phase known as the recession limb. This decline is influenced by factors such as the storage capacity of the watershed and the rate at which groundwater recharges the stream. Baseflow, the sustained flow from groundwater, is also discernible on the hydrograph, especially during periods of little to no precipitation. Analyzing hydrographs helps in flood forecasting, water resource management, and understanding the impact of land-use changes on water systems.
