Hydrogeology is the branch of geology that studies the distribution, movement, and quality of groundwater in the Earth’s subsurface. It covers the occurrence of aquifers, the mechanisms governing groundwater flow, recharge and discharge processes, and the interactions between groundwater and surface water. In Polish, the adjective describing this field is hydrogeologicznych, used in phrases referring to groundwater-related topics or studies.

A central concept is the aquifer, a permeable layer that stores and transmits water, contrasted with aquitards that restrict flow. Groundwater movement is often described by Darcy’s law, which relates discharge to hydraulic conductivity, hydraulic gradient, and cross-sectional area. Hydrogeology integrates geology, hydrology, chemistry, and physics to assess groundwater quantity, quality, and vulnerability to contamination. Recharge occurs from precipitation, infiltration, and surface-water infiltration, while discharge occurs at springs, wells, and as baseflow to rivers or oceans. Groundwater–surface water interactions influence ecosystems and water-resource planning.

Methods used in hydrogeology include borehole drilling and aquifer tests, tracer studies, and geophysical surveys, complemented by hydrochemical analyses to determine water origin and age. Modern practice increasingly employs numerical modeling and data assimilation to simulate groundwater flow and contaminant transport under changing climate and land use. Geologic mapping and stratigraphic understanding underpin site assessment and zoning decisions.

Applications span water-supply design, contamination assessment and remediation, environmental protection, civil and environmental engineering, and resource management. Global challenges include overexploitation, saltwater intrusion, and pollution, calling for sustainable management, monitoring networks, and informed policy to protect groundwater resources.
