Hydrofluorkolväten, commonly known as HFCs, are a group of organic compounds containing hydrogen, fluorine, and carbon atoms. They were developed as replacements for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which were phased out due to their ozone-depleting properties. HFCs do not deplete the ozone layer, making them a seemingly viable alternative in many applications.

The primary uses of HFCs are as refrigerants in air conditioning and refrigeration systems, propellants in aerosol sprays, and blowing agents for foam insulation. Their non-flammable nature and favorable thermodynamic properties make them suitable for these purposes. However, HFCs are potent greenhouse gases, with global warming potentials significantly higher than carbon dioxide. This means that even small amounts released into the atmosphere can contribute substantially to climate change.

Due to their significant contribution to global warming, there is an international effort, primarily driven by the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, to phase down the production and consumption of HFCs. This phase-down aims to reduce the risks associated with their high global warming potentials. As a result, industries are actively seeking and transitioning to alternative substances with lower or zero global warming potentials, such as hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and natural refrigerants like ammonia and carbon dioxide. The transition away from HFCs is a crucial step in mitigating climate change and achieving global environmental goals.
