A hunkie is a colloquial term used to refer to a group of ethnic Central Europeans, primarily of Czech, Slovak, and Czechoslovak descent, who settled in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These migrants, mostly from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, were attracted to the United States by the promise of economic opportunities, particularly in the coal mining and industrial regions of the Midwest, such as Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. They largely settled in the same areas as other immigrant groups, including Germans, Irish, and Poles.

Within these communities, hunkies typically practiced a unique blend of Catholicism, national traditions, and folk culture. Their social and economic status varied, with some individuals achieving a certain level of prosperity and others struggling to make ends meet. Hunkies were known to be largely self-sufficient, with many living on small farms or urban plots of land, and worked as laborers, farmers, or in the emerging industries.

Czech and Slovak language and customs were preserved within hunkie communities, with many adhering to traditional dress, cuisine, and holiday celebrations. They maintained ties to their ancestral homeland, and news from Europe was often eagerly conveyed and discussed. Hunkies also made significant contributions to their adoptive communities through cultural exchange, social activism, and labor union organization.

Their distinct identity as hunkies faded in the mid-20th century as subsequent waves of immigration and increasing social mobility led to greater assimilation and the disappearance of ethnic identities. While their distinct heritage is largely memory today, remnants of hunkie traditions and customs continue to influence the cultural landscape of their former American habitats.
