Human rating refers to the process of collecting evaluations from human evaluators about the quality, relevance, safety, or overall usefulness of content or machine-generated outputs. Ratings are usually obtained against predefined criteria and can take the form of numeric scales, categorical labels, or comparative judgments. The resulting data are used as ground truth for training, validating, and benchmarking AI systems, as well as for quality control in content production and moderation.

Methodologies commonly involve well-defined rubrics, training and calibration tasks for raters, and explicit criteria for what constitutes each rating level. Inter-annotator agreement metrics, such as Cohen’s kappa or Krippendorff’s alpha, are used to measure consistency among raters. Often multiple raters assess the same item, and disagreements may be adjudicated or averaged to produce a final score.

Applications span several areas. In AI development, human ratings underpin reward models and policy optimization in reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), serve as evaluation benchmarks, and help identify safety or alignment issues. In natural language processing, ratings assess quality aspects like usefulness, factuality, coherence, and style for tasks such as translation, summarization, and dialogue. In content moderation, human judgments determine acceptability and adherence to guidelines. In user experience research, ratings assess perceived usefulness or satisfaction with interfaces and features.

Challenges include subjectivity and rater bias, cost and scalability, cultural and domain differences, and potential fatigue or inconsistency. Ensuring diverse, well-trained raters and robust scoring rubrics is essential to producing reliable, actionable human ratings.
