Humaneness refers to the quality or state of being humane: concerned with alleviating suffering and promoting well-being in others, often expressed through compassion, kindness, mercy, and justice. It encompasses attitudes and behaviors toward both humans and nonhuman animals, and it functions as a moral ideal and a practical standard for conduct and policy.

Philosophically, humaneness has ancient roots in virtue ethics and religious morality, and it remains a subject of contemporary ethical debate. In modern secular ethics, debates center on how to weigh the interests of different beings: utilitarian approaches emphasize reducing suffering; deontological theories stress duties toward persons; and care ethics highlights relationships and dependency.
