Huemuls are a genus of deer native to South America, commonly known as South Andean deer. There are two extant species within this genus: the South Andean huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) and the Northern huemul (Hippocamelus antisensis). These animals are medium-sized, with a stocky build and a reddish-brown coat that provides camouflage in their mountainous habitats. They possess short antlers that are shed annually.

The South Andean huemul inhabits the temperate rainforests and Andean foothills of southern Chile and Argentina. It is a critically endangered species, facing threats from habitat loss, competition with livestock, and predation by introduced species like dogs. The Northern huemul is found in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and a small part of northern Chile. It is also endangered, primarily due to hunting and habitat degradation in its high-altitude grassland and scrubland environments.

Huemuls are herbivores, feeding on grasses, shrubs, and tree leaves. They are generally solitary or live in small family groups. Breeding seasons vary between species and regions. Conservation efforts are underway for both species, focusing on habitat protection, anti-poaching measures, and captive breeding programs. The huemul holds cultural significance in some South American countries, appearing on national symbols.
