Huemuls are a genus of deer native to South America, commonly known as South Andean deer. There are two extant species within this genus: the South Andean huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) and the Northern huemul (Hippocamelus antisensis). These animals are medium-sized, with a stocky build and a reddish-brown coat that provides camouflage in their mountainous habitats. They possess short antlers that are shed annually.
The South Andean huemul inhabits the temperate rainforests and Andean foothills of southern Chile and Argentina.
