Horoscopes, or horoskopes, are forecasts of a person's future outcomes and tendencies based on the positions of celestial bodies at a given time. In Western astrology, they are most commonly associated with the twelve zodiac signs; in other traditions, different systems apply. The term derives from Greek horoskopos, “hour watcher” or “marker of the hours.”

In practice, Western horoscopes are published as daily, weekly, or monthly predictions. General versions target sun signs, offering guidance on love, work, health, and finances. More detailed horoscopes may rely on a person’s natal chart and rising sign to tailor interpretations.

Origins trace to Hellenistic astrology in the Mediterranean, drawing on Babylonian and Egyptian traditions. The modern form gained mass popularity in newspapers and magazines in the 20th century and remains widespread online. Other systems include Vedic astrology and Chinese zodiac horoscopes.

Scientific assessment views astrology as lacking empirical support, with horoscopes often cited as examples of the Barnum effect—the tendency to accept vague statements as highly applicable. Proponents argue they offer guidance, reflection, and entertainment rather than precise predictions.

Despite criticisms, horoscopes continue to be a prominent feature of popular culture and lifestyle media, used for personal reflection, conversation, and routine entertainment across various cultures.
