Testosterone is a steroid hormone that belongs to the androgen group. It is the primary male sex hormone, produced mainly by the testes in men and in smaller amounts by the ovaries in women. The adrenal glands in both sexes also produce small quantities of testosterone. Its production is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, with the hypothalamus releasing gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). In males, testosterone plays a crucial role in the development of male reproductive tissues such as the testes and prostate, as well as promoting secondary sexual characteristics like increased muscle mass and bone mass, and the growth of body hair. It is also essential for sperm production and libido. In females, while present in lower concentrations, testosterone contributes to bone health, mood, and libido, and plays a role in ovarian function.

Levels of testosterone naturally fluctuate throughout life, generally peaking in adolescence and early adulthood and declining with age. Medical conditions, medications, and lifestyle factors can also affect testosterone levels. Abnormal levels, whether too high or too low, can lead to various health issues, prompting medical evaluation and, in some cases, treatment.
