It acts as the first barrier to remove larger suspended solids from liquids or gases, protecting downstream filters, sensors, and process equipment from abrasion, fouling, and contamination. In practice, the hoofdfilter is often referred to as a main filter or prefilter, depending on the arrangement and purpose within the system.

Construction and types

Hoofdfilters are housed in cartridges, bags, screens, or pleated cartridges. The filtration media include stainless steel mesh, woven fabrics, and various polymers, chosen for chemical compatibility, mechanical strength, and pressure drop characteristics. Filtration ratings, expressed in microns, span from coarse to medium ranges and are selected according to process requirements and the quality of the incoming stream. The filter is designed for periodic cleaning, backwashing, or replacement, as dictated by maintenance schedules and differential pressure across the element.

Applications
