Homogenized refers to a state or process in which components of a mixture, tissue, or system are made uniform in composition or structure. The term is used across several disciplines, often with distinct but related meanings, and derives from the Greek roots homo- (same) and genos (kind or origin).

In dairy and food processing, milk is said to be homogenized when fat globules are mechanically broken into very small particles and dispersed uniformly throughout the liquid. This creates a stable emulsion that prevents cream from separating and yields a smooth texture. Homogenization is typically achieved with high-pressure equipment or other emulsifying devices and is distinct from pasteurization, which targets microbial safety rather than fat distribution.

In mathematics and related fields, homogenization has two related senses. A homogeneous polynomial is one whose terms all have the same total degree. The process of homogenizing a non-homogeneous polynomial introduces an auxiliary variable to balance degrees, enabling treatment in projective geometry and certain algebraic computations. In the theory of partial differential equations and materials science, homogenization refers to methods that derive effective macroscopic equations or properties for media with fine-scale structure, by averaging or averaging-in-time to replace a heterogeneous medium with a homogeneous surrogate.

In materials science and engineering, homogenization theory seeks to predict the overall behavior of composites and porous media by accounting for microstructure and scale separation. This yields effective properties, such as stiffness or thermal conductivity, that describe the large-scale response without detailing every micro-scale feature.

In biology and chemistry, tissue or cell samples are sometimes prepared by homogenization—mechanical disruption to create a uniform suspension for assays or analytical measurements.
