Homebrew refers to the practice of creating products at home rather than purchasing commercially produced goods. Beverage homebrewing involves selecting ingredients, sanitizing equipment, fermenting with yeast, and aging or conditioning the final product. Practitioners range from casual hobbyists to serious enthusiasts who keep logs, share recipes, and participate in clubs and competitions. Equipment can range from basic kitchen kits to dedicated fermenters, temperature control, and bottling systems. Legal and safety considerations include local regulations on alcohol production, taxation, and the need to avoid contamination and over-pressurization.

Technology homebrew consists of software and hardware developed by individuals or small groups for personal use or community distribution. In computing and gaming, homebrew projects may include experimental applications, emulators, game ports, or custom firmware for devices not officially supported by manufacturers. Open-source licenses and maker culture underpin much of this activity, with communities sharing source code, documentation, and tutorials. Tradeoffs include potential warranty voidance, licensing issues, and compatibility challenges.
