Hoftesmerte refers to pain experienced in the hip joint region. This discomfort can originate from various structures within and around the hip, including the bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. The sensation of pain can range from a dull ache to sharp, intense pain and may be localized to the groin, outer hip, or buttocks. It can also radiate down the thigh.

Several factors can contribute to hoftesmerte. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, is a common cause, characterized by the breakdown of cartilage within the hip joint, leading to friction and pain. Fractures, particularly in the elderly due to osteoporosis, can cause significant hip pain. Bursitis, inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the hip joint, is another frequent culprit. Tendinitis, or inflammation of the tendons surrounding the hip, can also result in pain, often due to overuse or repetitive motions.

Muscle strains or tears in the hip flexors, gluteal muscles, or other surrounding musculature can lead to pain. Less common causes include nerve entrapment, such as sciatica, or referred pain from the lower back. The pain may be exacerbated by certain activities like walking, standing for prolonged periods, or rotating the leg. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, medical history, and potentially imaging tests like X-rays, MRI, or CT scans to identify the underlying cause. Treatment strategies vary depending on the diagnosis and may include rest, physical therapy, pain medication, or in some cases, surgery.
