Hitsaaja, also known as a welder, is a tradesperson who uses welding processes to join metal parts by heating the workpieces to fuse them. They prepare materials, fit and tack components, select the appropriate welding method and filler material, perform the weld, and inspect the finished welds for soundness and dimensional accuracy. They may also perform post-weld finishing and minor repairs.

The most common welding methods are MMA (manual metal arc) welding, MIG/MAG (wire arc welding with shielded gas), and TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding. Equipment includes welding power sources, torches or electrodes, fume extraction, and PPE. They often work with steel, stainless steel, aluminum and other metals, and may cut, grind, and deburr as part of the workflow.

Training generally combines classroom instruction with hands-on practice. In Finland this is typically the vocational qualification "hitsaajan perustutkinto," earned through school and apprenticeship. Comparable routes exist elsewhere via vocational education or apprenticeship programs, often followed by national or international welder certifications (for example ISO 9606 or AWS certifications) to demonstrate competence for specific processes or material groups.

Employment is common in metal fabrication, construction, shipbuilding, automotive, and repair industries. Welders may work in factories or on sites, sometimes in shifts. Working conditions can be hazardous, with exposure to heat, sparks, fumes and noise. Safety measures include protective clothing, welding helmet and gloves, ventilation, and adherence to relevant standards.
