Hypoxia refers to a condition in which the body or a region of the body is deprived of adequate oxygen supply at the tissue level. This can occur due to a variety of reasons, including impaired blood flow, reduced oxygen levels in the inhaled air, or problems with the body's ability to transport oxygen. Hypoxia can affect the entire body, known as generalized hypoxia, or specific organs or tissues, referred to as localized hypoxia.

Symptoms of hypoxia vary depending on the severity and location. Generalized hypoxia can manifest as shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, confusion, dizziness, and bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes (cyanosis). Localized hypoxia might present with specific symptoms related to the affected organ, such as chest pain in the case of myocardial hypoxia or neurological deficits with cerebral hypoxia.

The causes of hypoxia are diverse. Respiratory causes include lung diseases like pneumonia or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and conditions that impair breathing such as suffocation or drowning. Circulatory causes involve problems with blood flow, such as heart failure, blood clots, or severe blood loss (hemorrhage). Anemia, a condition with insufficient red blood cells to carry oxygen, is another significant cause. Environmental factors like high altitude, where atmospheric oxygen is lower, can also lead to hypoxia.

Diagnosis of hypoxia typically involves assessing oxygen saturation levels in the blood using a pulse oximeter or arterial blood gas analysis. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause and restoring adequate oxygenation. This may include administering supplemental oxygen, treating the specific disease or condition, or improving circulation. Prolonged or severe hypoxia can lead to significant tissue damage and can be life-threatening.
