Hipertansiyon, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a chronic medical condition where the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps it around the body. This pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is expressed as two numbers: systolic pressure (the higher number, representing the pressure when the heart beats) and diastolic pressure (the lower number, representing the pressure when the heart rests between beats).

Normal blood pressure is generally considered to be below 120/80 mmHg. Hypertension is typically diagnosed when blood pressure readings are consistently at or above 130/80 mmHg. There are two main types of hypertension: primary (or essential) hypertension, which develops gradually over time with no identifiable cause, and secondary hypertension, which is caused by an underlying medical condition such as kidney disease, thyroid problems, or certain medications.

Untreated hypertension can lead to serious health complications, including heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and vision problems. Lifestyle modifications are often the first line of treatment and include adopting a healthy diet low in sodium, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol consumption, and quitting smoking. In many cases, medication is also necessary to effectively manage blood pressure. Regular monitoring of blood pressure is crucial for individuals diagnosed with hypertension.
