It encompasses individuals and households with substantial wealth, high incomes, and assets such as real estate, investments, and business ownership, as well as those with prestigious occupations, elite education, and extensive social networks. The concept is historically contingent; in aristocratic or feudal societies it might designate landholding elites, while in modern capitalist economies it is often associated with corporate executives, successful professionals, entrepreneurs, and those with inherited wealth.

Measurement varies by context but commonly uses wealth (net worth), income, occupation, and educational attainment, sometimes combined with indicators of social prestige or lineage. The distinction between the higher class and the upper middle class can be fluid and culturally specific, leading to debates over boundaries and methodology. Social mobility is a key concern; in many countries, upward movement exists but is uneven and highly dependent on structural factors such as education, geography, and discrimination.

Critiques note that the concept of the higher class can obscure intersections with race, gender, and ethnicity, and may obscure differences within elite groups. It is also criticized for implying a rigid hierarchy in societies where status is more fluid or multi-dimensional, including cultural capital, networks, and political access.
