High-context is a term used in intercultural communication to describe a style of communication in which much information is conveyed through the surrounding context, nonverbal cues, shared experiences, and social relationships rather than through explicit, explicit verbal messages alone. In high-context communication, meaning is often inferred from tone, silence, status, and the situation, with much left unsaid or implied.

The concept, developed by the American anthropologist Edward T. Hall, contrasts with low-context communication, where information is spelled out plainly in words and written documents. High-context cultures tend to emphasize interpersonal harmony, long-standing relationships, and collective norms, and they rely on readers of context to interpret intent. This style is commonly associated with many East Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American, and some African cultures, though there is considerable variability within regions. Direct confrontation is often avoided, and diplomacy, indirect speech, and metaphor may be preferred.

Implications for cross-cultural interaction include differences in negotiation, management, and education. Outsiders from low-context cultures may find high-context communication opaque or ambiguous, while insiders may view directness from outsiders as rude. Effective engagement often requires relationship-building, sensitivity to nonverbal cues, and tolerance for ambiguity; in some cases, explicit agreements may be supplemented by informal understandings built over time.

Critiques note that the high-context/low-context dichotomy is a simplification and that cultures vary across individuals, situations, and modernization. The framework is best used as a heuristic rather than a fixed classification.
