Heteronormativiteten refers to the assumption that heterosexuality is the only natural, normal, or default sexual orientation. It is a societal belief system that structures society and culture around the idea that sexual and romantic attraction between men and women is the standard. This perspective often leads to the marginalization or invisibility of other sexual orientations, such as homosexuality, bisexuality, and asexuality.

Within a heteronormative framework, social institutions, laws, and cultural norms are often designed with heterosexual relationships as the presumed model. This can manifest in various ways, including expectations around marriage, family structures, gender roles, and even language. For instance, when asking about a person's partner, the default question might be "Do you have a boyfriend or girlfriend?" rather than a more inclusive "Do you have a partner?"

The concept of heteronormativity is closely linked to gender norms, as it often presumes a binary understanding of gender (male and female) and the idea that these genders are inherently attracted to each other. This can further exclude individuals who identify outside of this gender binary or who have non-heterosexual orientations. Critiques of heteronormativity highlight its role in perpetuating inequality and creating barriers for LGBTQ+ individuals.
