Hepatotoxins are substances that are poisonous or damaging to the liver. The mechanism of damage often involves the metabolic breakdown of the drug in the liver, leading to the formation of reactive intermediates that can harm liver cells.

Natural toxins, such as the aflatoxins produced by Aspergillus fungi found on moldy grains and nuts, can cause severe liver damage and are carcinogenic. Certain mushrooms, like the death cap (Amanita phalloides), contain potent toxins that can lead to acute liver failure.

Symptoms of hepatotoxicity can vary depending on the causative agent and the extent of liver damage. They may include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and dark urine. In severe cases, hepatotoxicity can progress to acute liver failure, a life-threatening condition requiring immediate medical intervention. Diagnosis typically involves liver function tests, imaging studies, and sometimes a liver biopsy. Prevention strategies focus on avoiding known hepatotoxins, such as limiting alcohol consumption and taking medications as prescribed.
