Hemimetaboloosi, also known as incomplete metamorphosis, is a type of insect development that involves a series of molts in which the young resemble the adult. This is in contrast to holometabolous insects, which undergo complete metamorphosis and have larval stages that are drastically different from the adult form.

In hemimetabolous insects, the life cycle typically begins with an egg. Upon hatching, a juvenile form called a nymph emerges. Nymphs generally share the same habitat and food source as adults and possess similar body structures, although they are smaller and lack fully developed wings or reproductive organs. As the nymph grows, it undergoes several molts, shedding its exoskeleton to accommodate its increasing size. With each molt, the nymph progresses through successive instars, gradually developing adult characteristics. The final molt results in the emergence of the winged, sexually mature adult.

Insects exhibiting hemimetaboloosi are often divided into two groups based on subtle differences in their nymphal stages. Those with aquatic nymphs are sometimes referred to as hemipteroid insects, while those with terrestrial nymphs are called exopterygoid insects. Common examples of insects with incomplete metamorphosis include grasshoppers, cockroaches, dragonflies, true bugs, and termites. This developmental strategy allows young insects to become functional and often independent soon after hatching, contributing to their ecological success.
