Headshaking is a behavioral phenomenon observed in horses characterized by involuntary, rapid shaking or nodding of the head. This behavior can manifest in various ways, including twitching of the muzzle, flicking of the ears, or a more pronounced up-and-down or side-to-side movement of the head. It is often triggered by external stimuli and can vary in intensity and frequency.

The causes of headshaking in horses are not fully understood and can be multifactorial. In some cases, it may be a response to irritants such as insects, dust, or pollen, particularly during warmer months. Other potential causes include neurological conditions, dental issues, or even issues with the bit or tack causing discomfort. Photophobia, or sensitivity to light, is also a recognized trigger for some horses, with symptoms often worsening in bright sunlight.

Diagnosing the cause of headshaking can be challenging. Veterinarians may perform a thorough physical examination, including checks of the eyes, teeth, and neurological function. Treatment strategies are dependent on the underlying cause. For insect-related irritation, fly masks and repellents may be recommended. If a neurological or dental problem is identified, specific medical or dental interventions will be pursued. Management of light sensitivity may involve the use of UV-blocking masks. In some instances, the cause remains idiopathic, meaning no specific identifiable reason can be found.
