Most hazard tapes are made from polyethylene or PVC and are coated with adhesive for easy application. Hazardtape is intended as a warning cue rather than a physical barrier. It is often used in conjunction with signs, barriers, or personnel to control access, and evaluators should replace or reposition the tape as conditions change. Because it is temporary, the tape can be removed or torn by authorized personnel and is not a substitute for authoritative safety measures.

Regulatory guidance on color schemes, durability, and placement varies by jurisdiction. In many regions, industry standards and safety guidelines advise using high-visibility colors and clear messaging, and they emphasize that tape should be compatible with the environmental conditions (outdoor exposure, UV resistance, moisture, temperature).

Limitations include the possibility of a false sense of security if used alone, wear from weather or foot traffic reducing visibility, and the risk of tampering. Organizations typically use hazard tape as part of a broader safety plan that includes signage, barriers, and trained personnel.
