The name is often presented as originating from a local fictional language, with proposed etymologies ranging from endurance or guardianship to enclosure, though no consensus exists.

Geography and society are described differently across works. In many portrayals, Hasurim inhabit harsh highland valleys, desert plateaus, or borderlands. Social structures range from nomadic clan confederations to semi-sedentary polities led by chieftains or merchant elites. Lineages, rites of passage, and forms of ancestor veneration appear in various depictions, while gender roles and social mobility reflect the world-building aims of individual authors rather than a fixed canon.

Economy and culture commonly emphasize mobility and trade. Hasurim are frequently portrayed as skilled metalworkers, caravan organizers, or craftspeople who maintain long-distance networks.
