In appearance, hartuar is depicted as a medium-sized mammal roughly 60 to 90 centimeters in length, with a broad, flat tail and webbed hind feet. It has dense, water-repellent fur that ranges from slate gray to brown, and a whiskered snout. Some accounts describe faint bioluminescent markings on the chest that glow faintly at dusk, a feature that appears mainly in oral traditions and later artistic renditions.

Ecology and behavior place the hartuar in riverine forests and mangrove edges. It is described as mainly nocturnal or crepuscular and omnivorous, feeding on aquatic plants, crustaceans, and small fish. Hartuars are said to be territorial and to form small family groups of two to six individuals. They reportedly construct simple lodges from reeds near water and use scent marking to delineate their territories.

Reproduction and life cycle are described with a breeding season aligned to the monsoon. Gestation is said to last about 70 to 80 days, yielding litters of one to three offspring. Young are cared for by the mother for several months before dispersing.
