harisnya

Harisnya are a form of hosiery worn on the legs and feet. They come in several varieties, most commonly knee-highs and thigh-high stockings. Thigh-high versions may stay up with a silicone band or require a garter belt to stay in place. In Hungarian, harisnya is used to refer to stockings, while harisnyanadrág denotes pantyhose or tights.

Materials and construction typically include nylon or synthetic blends, often with elastane for stretch. Traditional stockings may be made of silk, cotton, or wool for different seasons and occasions. Stockings have a toe and heel section, and many designs feature reinforced toes, ribbed or patterned legs, and different levels of opacity. Open- and closed-toe varieties exist, though closed-toe is more common for everyday wear.

History and usage note that stockings have long been a staple of women’s fashion in many cultures. Silk stockings were common before the mid-20th century but became scarce during wartime shortages. The invention and mass production of nylon in the late 1930s and 1940s spurred widespread use in the postwar era. In many parts of Europe, including Hungary, stockings remained a key component of formal or feminine attire into the late 20th century, with tights (harisnyanadrág) gaining popularity as a convenient alternative. Today, harisnya are worn for fashion, bridal wear, and traditional or vintage-inspired looks, as well as for warmth or comfort in cooler seasons.

Care and maintenance typically involve gentle washing and air drying to prevent runs and fiber damage. Some varieties are designed for easy care, while more delicate materials require careful handling and storage to extend their lifespan.
