In clinical psychiatry, harhaluulot correspond to the English concept of delusions and are a core feature of psychotic disorders, though they can also occur in mood disorders with psychotic features or substance-induced psychosis.

Etymology and scope: The word combines harha (illusion) and luulo (belief). It describes beliefs that resist revision and are not shared by others in the person’s cultural or social group. Delusions differ from hallucinations, which are false sensory experiences.

Common forms include persecutory delusions (being watched or conspired against), grandiose delusions (special importance or powers), referential delusions (events or objects have personal meaning), somatic delusions (bodily functions or appearance abnormal), and erotomanic delusions (believing someone is in love with the person). Some delusions are mood-congruent and linked to a depressive or manic episode; others are non–mood-congruent.
