Handtying is a traditional method of attaching components to a printed circuit board (PCB) by manually inserting leads through holes and then soldering them. This process is often used for prototypes, low-volume production, or for components that are not suitable for automated assembly, such as those with unusual lead shapes or very large packages.

The process typically involves a skilled technician carefully placing each component onto the PCB, ensuring the leads align with the corresponding holes. Once the components are positioned, they are often secured temporarily with a small amount of solder or a jig to prevent movement during the soldering stage. The soldering itself can be done using various methods, including hand soldering with a soldering iron, wave soldering, or reflow soldering, depending on the complexity and volume of the assembly.

While handtying offers flexibility and is essential for certain applications, it is generally more labor-intensive and slower than automated assembly processes like surface-mount technology (SMT). This can lead to higher production costs for large quantities. However, for rapid prototyping and specialized tasks, handtying remains a viable and important technique in electronics manufacturing.
