Halsirritation, or throat irritation, is a common symptom described as a scratchy, dry, or sore throat. It is not a disease itself but a sign of an underlying condition. Causes include viral infections such as the common cold or flu, bacterial infections such as strep throat, irritants like tobacco smoke, air pollution, and chemicals, allergies, postnasal drip, dehydration, dry air, voice overuse, and acid reflux.

Symptoms vary by cause but often include throat soreness, pain on swallowing, hoarseness, coughing, and a sensation of something in the throat. Fever and swollen glands may accompany infections. Chronic irritation lasting more than several weeks should prompt medical evaluation.

Diagnosis is usually clinical, based on history and physical examination. A throat swab or rapid strep test may be used when a bacterial infection is suspected. Red flags such as severe difficulty swallowing, persistent fever, dehydration, or a lump in the neck require further assessment.

Treatment targets the underlying cause and provides relief. General measures include hydration, saline gargles, humidified air, and throat lozenges. Viral infections are managed supportively; antibiotics are reserved for confirmed bacterial infections. Allergies respond to antihistamines or nasal steroids; reflux is managed with lifestyle changes and, if needed, acid-suppressive therapy. Avoiding irritants helps prevent recurrence.

Most cases improve within days to weeks. Persistent or recurrent throat irritation warrants medical evaluation to exclude chronic infection, reflux, allergies, or other conditions. Seek prompt care for severe throat pain, inability to swallow, dehydration, high fever, or a neck lump.
