The Hall effect is a fundamental physical phenomenon observed when an electric current flows through a conductor in the presence of a magnetic field. When a current-carrying conductor is placed perpendicular to a magnetic field, a voltage difference is generated across the conductor, perpendicular to both the current and the magnetic field. This voltage is known as the Hall voltage.

The Hall effect arises from the Lorentz force, which acts on the moving charge carriers (electrons or holes) within the conductor. The Hall coefficient is a measure of how readily charge carriers are deflected by the magnetic field and is related to the charge carrier density and type.

The Hall effect has numerous practical applications. Hall effect sensors are widely used to measure magnetic field strength, detect the presence of magnets, and determine the position or speed of rotating objects. They are found in a variety of devices, from automotive sensors for anti-lock braking systems to industrial automation and consumer electronics. The Hall effect also provides a valuable tool for studying the properties of materials, such as determining the type and density of charge carriers in semiconductors.
