This intermediate conductivity can be manipulated by introducing impurities, a process known as doping, or by applying external stimuli such as heat, light, or electric fields. The most common semiconductor materials are elements from Group 14 of the periodic table, such as silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge). Silicon is particularly prevalent due to its abundance, stability, and well-understood properties. Compound semiconductors, formed by combining elements from different groups, such as gallium arsenide (GaAs) and indium phosphide (InP), also play crucial roles, often exhibiting superior electronic or optical properties for specific applications.

The behavior of electrons within a semiconductor is described by band theory. At absolute zero temperature, the valence band, where electrons are bound to atoms, is full, and the conduction band, where electrons are free to move and conduct electricity, is empty. As temperature increases or energy is supplied, electrons can gain enough energy to jump from the valence band to the conduction band, creating mobile charge carriers. Doping introduces either excess electrons (n-type semiconductor) or "holes" (vacancies left by electrons, acting as positive charge carriers, p-type semiconductor), dramatically altering conductivity.

These controllable electrical properties enable the creation of essential electronic components like diodes, transistors, and integrated circuits, forming the backbone of virtually all electronic devices.
