Haaveils is a term used to describe a specific type of veil that originates from the highland regions of the Northern Isles. The word is derived from the Old Norse “háavísi,” meaning “high veil,” and it entered modern usage in the mid‑19th century. Haaveils are traditionally made from fine, white linen or silk and are embroidered with silver thread in geometric patterns. The design typically features a narrow band at the forehead, a larger panel covering the back of the head, and a fringe that drapes over the shoulders.

In historical records, haaveils were worn by both men and women during ceremonial occasions such as weddings, baptisms, and various festivals. The veil served not only a decorative function but also had a symbolic role as a protective garment, believed to ward off the gaze of spirits. The material and decoration of a haaveil were often compared with wealth and status; richly embroidered versions were reserved for the familial elite.
