Hällbilder are images carved, pecked, or scratched into bedrock surfaces (hällar) in the Nordic landscape, and they form part of the region’s rock-art tradition. The term is used in Swedish archaeology to describe images produced directly on natural rock, distinguishing them from painted rock art or inscriptions cut into other materials. Techniques typically involve removing the rock surface with simple tools to create grooves, outlines, or relief-like features; some instances show traces of ochre pigment.

Hällbilder generally date to the Bronze Age and Iron Age, though exact chronologies vary by site. They are found on exposed rock faces, boulder fields, and cliff surfaces, often along old travel routes, near settlements, or beside burial places. Regions with notable hällbilder traditions include parts of Sweden such as Gotland, Uppland, Bohuslän, and Dalarna, with related rock-art practices recorded across neighboring Nordic areas.

Motifs in hällbilder encompass a range of subjects, including human figures, animals (such as deer or wild cattle), ships and boats, weapons, daily-life scenes, and geometric symbols like spirals and circles. Some images are interpreted as ritual or mythological scenes, while others may function as markers of territory, memory, or landscape use. Because the imagery is open to interpretation, scholars emphasize multiple possible functions and caution against assuming a single purpose for all examples.

Preservation and study of hällbilder face challenges from weathering, biological growth, and human disturbance. Documentation methods—photography, tracing, and increasingly 3D scanning—are important for recording motifs and aiding conservation, education, and ongoing research into prehistoric Nordic societies.
