Gårdsbyggnad, or farm building, refers to the structures found on a Swedish farm that are used for various agricultural and domestic purposes. The term covers a wide range of buildings, from traditional barns (tjällgard eller ridhus) to stables, silos, sheds, and livestock houses. Historically, the design of a gårdsbyggnad reflected the local climate, available building materials, and the specific farming practices of the region.

In northern Sweden, wooden log structures were common, often with steep roofs to shed snowfall. In the south, stone or brick constructions were more typical, and many historic farmsteads feature a central stone house surrounded by several outbuildings. The classic Swedish barn, or "fartyg," typically has a raised floor for storage of hay and barley, and a lower level for livestock. A newer category, the "Skyddstal," was introduced in the late 20th century to provide protected and climate-controlled storage for livestock and equipment.

Modern gårdsbyggnader combine traditional design with contemporary building technology. Insulated walls, double-glazed windows, and solar panels are increasingly common. Some farm buildings are repurposed for agro-tourism, housing visitor accommodations or restaurants that showcase local produce.

For conservation, Sweden has a network of heritage registers that identify and protect significant farm buildings. The Swedish Agency for Cultural Protection lists several restored 18th-century barns that illustrate traditional building techniques. Throughout the country, farm buildings remain an important link to agricultural heritage and rural identity.
