Skyddstal

Skyddstal is a Swedish term that translates to "protection number" or "safety rating" and is primarily used in the context of electrical safety. It refers to the degree of protection provided by an electrical enclosure against access to hazardous parts, ingress of foreign objects, and ingress of water. This concept is standardized internationally, most notably by the Ingress Protection (IP) rating system.

The Skyddstal, or IP rating, consists of two digits. The first digit indicates the level of protection against solid objects and dust. For example, a rating of 0 means no protection, while a rating of 6 signifies complete protection against dust ingress. The second digit specifies the level of protection against water. A rating of 0 indicates no protection against water, while a rating of 8 suggests protection against continuous immersion in water under specified conditions.

Therefore, a higher Skyddstal value generally implies greater protection for both the user and the equipment within the enclosure. Electrical enclosures in various applications, from consumer electronics to industrial machinery, are assigned Skyddstal ratings to inform users about their suitability for different environments and operating conditions. This ensures that the appropriate level of safety is maintained.
