Gyújtásidzítés is a Hungarian term that translates to "ignition timing" in English. It refers to the precise moment in an internal combustion engine's cycle when the spark plug ignites the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder. This timing is critical for efficient engine operation, power output, and fuel economy.

The ideal ignition timing is not fixed but varies depending on several factors, including engine speed (RPM), engine load, fuel octane rating, and engine temperature. In older vehicles, ignition timing was often adjusted manually using a timing light and distributor adjustments. Modern engines, however, utilize sophisticated electronic control units (ECUs) that dynamically control ignition timing based on sensor inputs.

The ECU monitors various sensors, such as the crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, and manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor. Based on the data from these sensors, the ECU calculates and adjusts the ignition timing in real-time to optimize performance and emissions. Advancing the ignition timing means igniting the mixture earlier in the compression stroke, while retarding it means igniting it later. Incorrect ignition timing can lead to various problems, including engine knocking (detonation), loss of power, increased fuel consumption, and potential engine damage.
