Gyógyszerfejlesztés, also known as drug development, is the complex process of bringing a new pharmaceutical drug to the market for use by patients. This process is lengthy, expensive, and highly regulated, involving multiple stages from initial discovery to post-market surveillance. The primary goal is to ensure that new medicines are both safe and effective.

The journey begins with drug discovery, where scientists identify potential therapeutic compounds. This can involve screening existing drugs, studying disease mechanisms, or using computational methods. Once a promising candidate molecule is identified, it undergoes preclinical research. This phase includes in vitro (laboratory) and in vivo (animal) testing to assess its safety profile, toxicity, and potential efficacy. If preclinical studies are successful, the drug moves to clinical trials in humans.

Clinical trials are divided into several phases. Phase 1 involves a small group of healthy volunteers to evaluate safety, dosage, and side effects. Phase 2 studies a larger group of patients with the target condition to assess efficacy and further evaluate safety. Phase 3 involves a much larger and diverse patient population to confirm efficacy, monitor side effects, compare it to standard treatments, and collect information that will allow the drug to be used safely.

Upon successful completion of clinical trials, the pharmaceutical company submits a comprehensive dossier of all collected data to regulatory authorities, such as the European Medicines Agency (EMA) or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for review. If approved, the drug can be manufactured and marketed. Post-market surveillance, known as Phase 4, continues to monitor the drug's safety and effectiveness in the general population and may identify rare side effects or new uses.
